A lot of people all over the world report about changed social rules, new ideals and problems uprising from the usage of MMORPGs like World of Warcraft. A comic approch to this can be found at Frozen Hippo (video).Gamasutra talks about the wrongdoings WoW does teaching people that time equals skill. Which does make sense in World of Warcraft, but hardly applies outside the gaming world where skill isn’t always something you aquire but rather “have”. WoW Insider discuss the family values that arise from playing the game together as a family. Both positive and negative effects can ofcourse be seen. Would you like to play with your mother?

Something I’m sure you all have experienced is the loneliness you get in a game even if there are thousands of others around there. Being online can be social, but is it really as social as some say it is? We have previously posted about the responsibilities Blizzard has for making sure minorities can keep their rights. There has recently been a fuzz about the way ingame operators have been threating gay people. Boing boing takes this into mention. “Don’t tell anyone you’re queer“.

Ge Jin, a PhD student is currently making a video documentation about the live of gold farmers. He studies the workers economic and social situation.

Surprisingly their hardest problem are other players like you and me who also spend some time of their day farming. Not as professionally as these chinese gold farmers. But if you have a special root and someone has killed some Mobs on your route it also sucks for theses guys. Amongst themself they seem to have a very happy and positive thing going.
